Victorian Ruby Diamond Cross circa 1850
Stock No. 1539
An 18ct Cross with Rubies and Diamonds circa 1850
Single row of Calibré cut natural colour rubies framing a diamond set foliate central design. Single centre diamond approx 0.4ct. Pavé set with old mine and rose cut diamonds.
Total Diamond weight 2.0cts approx, commercial colour and purity, set in 18ct yellow gold and silver.
Setting diamonds in silver, “silver set”, was a technique used in the Georgian/Victorian period as white coloured gold and platinum were not yet available. A very thin layer of silver was applied to the gold, on which the diamonds were set, to show them off to their best advantage (as the yellow would reflect and distort the white colour of the diamonds).
Dimensions:
Width (at widest point) 5.1cm
Length (at longest point) 6.9cm
All the precious stones in our jewellery are natural colours, none have had their colour enhanced by artificial treatment.
